Young people of Japan!
When Dorothée Menzner and I travelled through this wonderful country we only saw young people.
We met young people of the age of 97 years like Dr Shuntaro Hida and we met by age even younger personalities like Kenzaburo Oe, Keiko Ochiai, Deputy Hattori Ryoichi, Professor Hiroaki Koide, Priest Tetsuen Nakajima to who I wish to extend a special message of solidarity, Toyonaga Keisaburo, Siina Chieko, Professor Yuki Tanaka, Taro Yamamoto, Aileen Mioko Smith, Kuniyoshi Murata, Seishi Hinada, Rena Masuyama and all of you.
You all are young, as your mind is young.
You prove that Japan is a young nation despite good old traditions.
I am proud to stand here as your friend and I feel young when I see your movement to peacefully change your society and eventually our’s in Europe, too.
A renewed Internationalism is growing and you are the one’s who have given birth to it!
This is the catalysing effect Fukushima has and we have to build upon that momentum.
For an observer like me it fills me with joy to see how nuclear capitalism will be overcome.
A bit more than 20 years ago I interviewed the last president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail S. Gorbachev.
After we have had great hopes for a democratic and free Russia and Eastern Europe, we had to learn that freedom and democracy alone are not enough in order to obtain a free, liberal, social and democratic society.
When I asked Mr Gorbachev why his strategy had not worked out he said that the Banks and Financial Markets had forced him to open the Soviet market indiscriminately and that because he was not willing to do that the West had dropped him like a hot potato.
He was replaced by another president who committed himself to exactly what the Western World’s multinational corporations wanted. The result has been the de-industrialisation and bankruptcy of the former Soviet Union.
70,000 industries were lost overnight, throwing millions of social existences into jeopardy irrespectively and irreversibly just like the A bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki did.
Whenever I meet Mr Gorbachev again he always reiterates that he had wanted to do good but that unfortunately Capitalism got in his way.
Now, it is time for Perestroika and Glasnost in Japan and this time history will not benefit Capitalism but a new Humanism!
In 1994 when I travelled with Nelson Mandela and F W de Klerk, two young African men of the age of Dr. Shuntaro Hida and Mr Toyonaga Keisaburo, I again dreamed the dream of a new world without wars, a world of social humanism and equal rights for everyone irrespective of colour of skin, social background and religion but I asked both, President Mandela and President F W de Klerk, whether they thought that there was not the danger of Social Apartheid arising that was to replace the fascist racism of the old South Africa and both presidents said that, yes, they feared that this was to happen.
10 years later I asked both then ex – presidents the same question again and they both replied that very sadly it came as we feared it would in the back-then – days.
Today, the Walls are no longer between East and West, black, white, yellow and red, between Muslims, Jewish, Shintuists, Hindi and Christians but between top and bottom of our societies.
At a time of a renewed world wide nuclear proliferation and atomic tests not only by Israel and Iran but also by India and North Korea these circumstances give the Hibakusha and the Japanese nation a role like we Germans might have in regards to the Middle East conflict in which we shall use our influence not only to criticise but also to work towards peace and democracy.
But, to play such a role convincingly requires to confront one’s own history and to come clean with such, in the case of Japan this would require an honest heart-to-heart talk by the government with the citizens and most importantly with Japan’s neighbours in the region making permanent peace become possible also with nations such as China and Russia, partnerships that might prove to be mutually beneficial, also if one considers that Japan will have to import natural gas from Russia in order to sustain it’s changeover to a long-term energy concept that one day will be dominated by renewable resources.
Fair trade along with a new economic model that is not driven by profit maximisation dreams of a few shareholders and owners is within reach and it will be great for Japan as the first of the G 7 countries to prove to the world that it is possible to transform society in which industrial production is serving the people and not vice-versa and have the economic principles make industries produce not solely for profit but for actual demand.
Friendship and Peace between the nations is the only way forward even though the world today looks rather fragile.
The hope that is being spread from Hiro- to Fukushima shall overcome all these predicaments and will conquer the world.
I feel that the young nation of Japan will show to the world that it is possible to change without neglecting one’s heritage and traditions.
“Nuke is over!” Kuniyoshi Murata said and I would like to add that also Nuclear Capitalism and Economic Apartheid are over!
A new World is not possible, but a new economic system is. Profit maximization ultimately leads to destruction of economic capacity as well as life on Earth. That’s why we ought to fight for a new, mathematically sound, economic order.
Direct your eyes onto the ocean, see the nuclear power stations switch off and course your eyes to the sky that is lit with hope for all people of goodwill, and understand that the beauty is motion but motion does not last.
Nelson Mandela rightly said that once you have reached the peak of a mountain you will see ever more and higher peaks.
Whenever a mountain rises before us we will take it by the power of solidarity.
And, when everyone is telling us that it was impossible to reach highest goals we shall nevertheless reach for them because we can pretend that we simply didn’t know what they were talking about.
That’s why it takes young people of all ages to keep moving towards a better economic system.
Young people of Japan, the German Anti Nuclear Movement is at your side!
And we, especially Dorothée Menzner and myself, look forward to welcoming you in Germany later this year.
The world is watching you! Some dreams can come true. It is in your hands.

日本の若者の皆さん！
ドロテー・メンツナーと私がこの素晴らしい国を旅したとき、私たちは若い人たちばかりに出会いました。
若い人たちというのは、たとえば９７歳の肥田俊太郎先生、それよりもさらにお若い大江健三郎氏、落合恵子さん、服部良一議員、小出裕章先生、明通寺ご住職の中島哲演さん（共に戦う大事な仲間として、ご住職に心からエールを送りたいと思います）、豊永圭三郎さん、椎名千恵子さん、田中利幸教授、山本太郎さん、アイリーン・美緒子・スミスさん、村田訓吉さん、日南田成志さん、増山麗奈さんと、ここにいらっしゃった皆さんです。
皆さんは、若い心を持っているから、若くいられるのです。
日本は古い伝統を持つ国ですが、同時に若い心も持ち合わせているのだということを、皆さん方が証明してくれました。
私は、皆さんの友人としてここに立てることを、とても誇りに思っています。そして、社会に平和をもたらすために立ち上がる皆さんや、欧州の人々を見ることによって、自分もまた若く感じられます。
今ここに新しい国際主義が育みつつあり、それを生み出したのはまさしく皆さんです。
福島の事故は、その触媒の役目を果たしましたが、私たちはその勢いに力を借りなければなりません。
私は、今後の社会が原子力資本主義をどのように乗り越えていくか、期待と共に見守っていきたいと思っています。
今から二十数年前、私は旧ソビエト連邦のミハイル・Ｓ・ゴルバチョフ元大統領にインタビューをしたことがあります。
私たちは、自由で民主主義的なロシアと東欧の未来に大きな希望を抱きましたが、「自由」と「民主主義」を国の方針として掲げるだけでは、本当にリベラルで、社会的で、民主主義的で、自由な社会は得られないことを学びました。
私はゴルバチョフ氏に、彼の戦略が何故、機能しなかったのかを尋ねました。すると彼は、西側世界の銀行と金融市場が旧ソ連の市場を開放するように強いたが、彼はそれを良しとしなかったため、西側世界は彼との関係を突然絶ったのだと言っていました。
こうして、彼の代わりに、西側世界の国々の協力を欲した者が、次の大統領になりました。しかしその結果は、旧ソ連の産業衰退および破綻でした。
七万件にも及ぶ製造業が、ちょうど広島と長崎の爆弾が、町を焼け野原に変えてしまったように、一夜にして滅び、何百万人もの人々が存在理由を失い、今でもまだ生きる価値を見出せないでいます。
ゴルバチョフ氏に再会する度に、彼はこう繰り返します。私は常にこの国を良くしたいと思っていた、しかし不幸なことに資本主義がその行く手を阻んだのだと。
今こそ日本に、ペレストロイカとグラスノスチがやって来るべき時代だと私は思います。そして、この歴史は今度こそ、資本主義ではなく、新しいヒューマニズムに貢献すべきでしょう。
１９９４年、肥田俊太郎先生や豊永圭三郎氏と同じ年代である、二人の若いアフリカ人、ネルソン・マンデラ氏、フレデリック・ウィレム・デクラーク氏と共に旅をしたときのことです。私は、争乱がなく、また皮膚の色や社会的背景、宗教によって差別されることのない博愛主義の社会を夢見ており、マンデラ氏とクラーク氏の二人にこう尋ねました。「今まで南アフリカにはびこっていた人種差別に変わり、今度は社会的なアパルトヘイトが強さを増しているように思えませんか？」すると、二人とも「ええ、私もそれを恐れています」と答えました。
それから十年後、私が再び二人の元大統領らに同じ質問を投げかけたところ、彼らは、「悲しいことに、自分が恐れていたことが現実になった」と答えました。
今日、東と西の間に壁はなく、白人、黒人、アジア人とインディアン、イスラム教、ユダヤ教、神道、ヒンズー教とキリスト教に至っても、その壁は薄れつつありますが、社会の上層と下層は未だにくっきりと分かれています。
イスラエルやイラン、北朝鮮など、世界的な核拡散の時代において、日本と、被曝の過去を持つ人たちは、中東紛争におけるドイツ人と同じ役割を果たすことが出来ると思います。ドイツも、平和と民主主義を目指すために、ただ批判をするだけでなく、中東紛争に関わって影響を与えています。
けれども、こうした役割を自ら納得して引き受けるには、自国の歴史に正面から向き合い、ありのままの歴史を受け止めなくてはなりません。日本の場合は、政府がもっと日本国民と周辺国に心を開いて、正直に腹を割って話さなければならないと思いますし、それによって中国やロシアのような国との間にも、平和を築き上げられると、私は思います。また、いつか再生可能エネルギーが、今までの資源に代わるまでは、ロシアの天然エネルギーを輸入して、間を繋ぐべきであると考えます。
フェアトレードを伴う新しい経済モデルは、私たちの手に届く所にあります。しかし実際、現代社会を支配しているのは、少数の資源の所有者が少しでも多くの利益を上げることに専念した経済モデルです。もしここで日本が、産業が人間を利用するのではなくて、その逆、すなわち本当に人間のためとなる、新しい経済モデルに移行するならば、先進七か国の中で、初めてそれを成し遂げることになります。そして、利益を生むためだけに製品を作るのではなく、本当に人々が必要としている製品を作る、そうした社会が実現可能なのだと証明することになります。それが出来たら、本当に素晴らしいと思います。
いかに今日の世界が脆く壊れやすいものに見えても、国家間の友情と平和は、私たちが前に進むるための、唯一の道です。
広島から福島へと繋がる、私たちの希望はいつかこの窮状を克服し、世界に広まっていくでしょう。
私は、日本人が自分の起源と伝統を否定することなく、社会を変えていく力を持っていると信じています。
村田訓吉さんは、「Nuke is over!（核の時代は終わった！）」と言いました。私はそこに「原子力資本主義と経済的アパルトヘイトの時代も終わった」と付け足したいと思います。
私たちは新世界を作ることは出来ません。しかし、新しい経済モデルを作ることは出来ます。短期的に利益を上げるだけの経済システムでは、人も経済もいつかはダメになってしまいます。
それが、長い目で見てプラスになる経済ルールを作るために、戦わなければならない理由です。
さあ、海を見てください。海沿いの原発が稼動停止するところを。
空を見てください。空には人々の希望が溢れています。
そして、今美しいものでも、それが永久に続くわけではないことを分かってください。
ネルソン・マンデラの言葉に、こういうものがあります。「大きな山を登った後にだけ、人はさらに登るべきたくさんの山があることを見出す」
私たちの目の前の山が大きくなってしまったら、他人と手を取り合うことで、乗り越えることができます。達成するまで、それは不可能だと人は言いますが、その人たちが話していることなど、自分には分かりませんから、ただひたすら、前に進むしかないのです。
それが、私たちがより良い経済システムを手に入れるため、日々努力をしなければならない理由です。
ドロテー・メンツナーと私は、皆さんが今年ドイツにいらっしゃることを心待ちにしていますし、歓迎いたします。
世界はあなたたちに注目しています。
いくつかの夢は叶う。
